SUMMARY:Presentation: Archaeological Finds From the Wentworth House Site
DESCRIPTION:Archaeologists Alix Martin and Tad Baker will present a talk on the preliminary findings from last year’s archaeological excavation at the original site of Rollinsford’s historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House at 7 pm on Wednesday\, April 15 in the Community Room of the Rollinsford Public Library. \nDATE: Wednesday\, April 15\, 2026\nTIME: 7:00 pm\nLOCATION: Rollinsford Public Library Community Room \nConstructed circa 1701\, the Colonel Paul Wentworth House witnessed the development of the town of Rollinsford from Colonel Wentworth’s sawmills to a bustling industrial mill town. Last year\, a partnership among the Association for Rollinsford Culture and History (ARCH)\, Strawbery Banke Museum\, and the property owner resulted in a successful archaeological excavation of the original site of the house. Thousands of artifacts were recovered during the dig\, which identified the foundation of the rear lean-to of the Wentworth House. \nArchaeologists also determined that the details of the map of the site drawn by the Historic American Building Survey in 1936 were incorrect. The artifacts recovered and our new\nunderstanding of the layout of the yard and its outbuildings\, including a carriage house described as slaves’ quarters\, will help ARCH better interpret the lives of the property’s\ninhabitants. \nTo follow up on last year’s dig\, a second archaeological field school will take place at the site this June. Plans are in the works to offer tours of the dig site while the field school is in progress. \nThis lecture is free and open to the public although donations will be gratefully accepted. For more information about the lecture or the field school\, send an email to\npaulwentworthhouse@gmail.com.

SUMMARY:Unsettled Frontier: 17th Century New England
DESCRIPTION:Step back in time at this new living history event.\nWhen Paul Wentworth built his house in 1701\, the Piscataqua region was still on the edge of the New England frontier. The previous eight decades had seen frequent bloody conflicts as the English and French vied for control of the region and indigenous people struggled to maintain their traditional ways of life. Join us at our new living history event\, Unsettled Frontier\, where we will explore the lives of inhabitants of the region during the first century of English settlement. \nSATURDAY: September 6 from 10-4\nSUNDAY: September 7 from 10-3 \nIn this two-day event\, visitors can interact with historical re-enactors in period dress and experience many aspects of life in New England during the first century of colonization. Militia men who defended the settlements will demonstrate their equipment and weapons\, including matchlock musket firings. \nVisitors will also learn about economic activities in the region\, such as lumbering and the fur trade; the architecture\, food\, clothing\, and ceramics of early New Englanders; and Native American perspectives on events such as King Philip’s War\, the Cochecho massacre of 1689\, and the Salmon Falls raid of 1690. \nSunday at 11:00AM – Witchcraft & Counter-Magic\nEnglish settlers also brought their religious beliefs and superstitions with them to the New World\, and on Sunday at 11 am\, Dr. Tad Baker\, historical archaeologist and author of A Storm of Witchcraft: The Salem Trials and the American Experience\, will present a talk on 17th century New Englanders’ beliefs about witchcraft\, magic and counter-magic. \n

SUMMARY:2025 ARCH Annual Meeting & Ice Cream Social
DESCRIPTION:Mark your calendars for a night of fun!\nAll are invited to the Wentworth House for this year’s annual meeting – this year’s celebration is sure to be extra sweet! \nDATE: Thursday\, June 19\, 2025\nTIME: Quick Member Meeting at 6:00\, Fun and ice cream from 6:15-7:30\nCOST: This event is free and open to all! \nArchaeology & Ice Cream!\nAfter a short business meeting for members (details below)\, archaeologists Emerson Baker and Alix Martin will share preliminary findings from the archaeological field school at the original Wentworth House site. \nThen linger awhile to enjoy an ice cream social\, take a tour of this year’s exhibit\, Please Be Seated\, and mingle with fellow ARCH members! \n\nARCH Annual Reports \n\nARCH Financial Report for Fiscal Year 2024\nEducation Committee Report\nBuilding & Grounds Report\nDevelopment Committee Report\nCollections Committee Report\nGovernance Committee Report\n\n\nProposed Amendment:\nProposed amendment to Article IV (Officers)\, Section 3.d of the ARCH By-laws \nCurrent wording:\nd. The treasurer shall be responsible for ensuring that the Association is financially accountable\, has mechanisms in place to keep it financially sound and is operated appropriately. The treasurer reports to the board and to the members at the Annual Meeting. The treasurer shall be bonded. \nProposed change: Replace last sentence with of section d with The treasurer shall be provided an annual stipend of $50.00. \nReason for the proposed change: Cost and extensive requirements for financial controls. By providing the treasurer with this minimal stipend\, the treasurer is treated as an employee for the purposes of insuring for employee losses through theft or fraud under our three existing insurance policies. Bonding would require a fourth insurance policy\, a Crime Protection Insurance Policy. Such policies are generally designed for municipalities\, not small nonprofits\, and would cost significantly more than the $50 stipend.
