DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special lecture by Dr. Dane Morrison\, “Revolution Comes to the Seacoast.”\nFour months before the “shot heard round the world” was fired at Lexington and Concord in April 1775\, the farmers and fishermen of Seacoast New Hampshire rose up to defy British authority at Fort William and Mary. This is a part of New Hampshire history with which area residents are quite familiar. Less well known is the story of how the colonist’s resistance movement came together. \nTextbooks recall their recitation of grievances: taxes and tyranny; and their demands: relief from impositions on their liberty and recognition of their right to representation. But books seldom explore what these terms meant to those who protested and risked their lives and livelihoods. SUMMARY:18th Century Larkin & Smith English Gown Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Create an 18th century Larkin & Smith gown!\nIn this 2 1/2-day workshop\, At the Sign of the Golden Scissors will teach us to construct an English stomacher front gown in a period manner using the Larking and Smith English Gown Pattern. \nThe en fourreau back was one of the most popular styles of gown during the 18th century and can easily suit a variety of impressions depending on choice of fabric and trim. The focus for this workshop will be on making gowns suitable to the early 1770s with information on how to make an earlier style if desired. \nAt the end of the workshop\, you will have a personalized pattern for reuse and your gown 75-90% finished. During the workshop\, you will also have the chance to examine some of the original 18th century items in the collection of the Golden Scissors! \nFriday\, October 2 : 1 – 4pm\nSaturday\, October 3 : 9:30am – 3:30pm\nSunday\, October 4 : 9:30am – 3:30pm \nCOST: $295 (A portion of this fee will benefit The Wentworth House.) \nRegister for this Workshop \n  \nAbout the Workshop\nMake sure you have a copy of the pattern for the workshop! Go to the Golden Scissors website to purchase your Larkin and Smith English Gown Pattern\, and it will be mailed to you prior to the workshop. (They also have great information on how to size\, etc.) \nBodice lining fabric is included. Home work will be required to complete your gown! Pre-approval of fabric is also necessary to ensure you have what you need. Stays are required to fit your gown. Students should plan to bring and wear their shift\, stays\, under petticoat\, and shoes. Students should be familiar with basic hand sewing skills and have some knowledge of 18th century clothing. \nAn email with pre-workshop homework\, information on selecting fabrics\, directions to the workshop location\, and suggested lodging will be sent out prior to the workshop. Complimentary snacks provided (please notify us of any food restrictions). Plan to bring a bag lunch on Saturday and Sunday! \nA minimum of 4 is required for the gown workshop (6 people max for this particular workshop location.) This is a two-and-a-half day workshop. DESCRIPTION:Craft demonstrations • Hearth cooking demos • Militia drills\nTravel back in time to the American Revolution at the historic Colonel Paul Wentworth House. The sights and sounds of the Revolutionary era will come to life at a colonial market fair with 18th century craftspeople at work\, while the militia musters in preparation for joining General Washington’s forces against the British. \nSATURDAY: Saturday October 17: 10:00–4:00\nSUNDAY: October 18: 10:00–3:00 \nAt the market fair\, artisans in colonial dress will demonstrate period crafts such as joinery\, wood carving\, smithing\, basket weaving\, shoemaking\, spinning\, millinery\, and hearth cooking. Meanwhile\, militiamen will perform musket drills and firings throughout both days\, and raise a Liberty flag at 2 pm on Saturday. Special kids’ drills will take place at 11:30 on Saturday and again at noon on Sunday. \nKIDS DRILLS\nSaturday: 11:30 am\nSunday: Noon \nTours of the Wentworth House will also be available!
