Chair Chat with Allan Breed: Reproducing the Bradford Chair

In conjunction with our 2025 exhibit, Please Be Seated: Chairs of Old New England, the Wentworth House will be hosting Chair Chats with artisans Allan Breed and Charlie Ryland.
Allan Breed: Cabinet and Chair Maker, Carver
Join us at the Wentworth House on September 10 as noted furniture craftsman Allan Breed will present a talk on “Reproducing the Bradford Chair.”
DATE: Wednesday, September 10
TIME: 6:30 pm
Many years ago, Breed crafted an authentic reproduction of an historic Pilgrim Century chair known as the Bradford chair. The original mid-17th century chair is believed to have belonged to William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth colony between 1621 and 1657, and is now in the collections of Pilgrim Hall Museum. Breed’s talk will provide insight into the design and construction of 17th century New England chairs.
Admission is by donation. Afterwards, visitors will also have an opportunity to view the exhibit, which features a variety of 17th through early 19th century chairs, most on loan from private collections and many made in the Piscataqua region. We will also be holding a chair chat on September 17 with Charlie Ryland.
