Gallery Talk: Chair Chat with Antiquarian Hollis Brodrick

SPECIAL EVENT – SUNDAY, JULY 13

As part of our 2025 Exhibit, Please Be Seated, noted Portsmouth antiques expert Hollis Brodrick will give a gallery talk on Sunday, July 13 at the Wentworth House. Several of the chairs in the exhibit are from his personal collection, and his talk will focus on construction details which identify them as made in the Portsmouth area.

The talk will be followed by light refreshments in the dining room of the Wentworth House. The program is free of charge although donations will be greatly appreciated.

About the Speaker

Hollis Brodrick Antique Expert

Hollis Brodrick is noted antiquarian based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. He is a specialist in decorative arts and artifacts of the American Colonial Period, and is particularly renowned his collections of rare everyday objects that offer us a peek into the many facets of Colonial life.

About the Exhibit

Please Be Seated: Chairs of Old New England features chairs made and used in eastern New England from the late 17th to the early 19th centuries.

Drawn primarily from private collections, with many rarely or never before publicly exhibited, the exhibit features an array of elegant and unusual chairs from the Pilgrim era through the early years of the Republic. Many were either made in the Piscataqua region or otherwise have strong connections to the area.

Please Be Seated is on view on Saturdays between 1 and 4 pm through October 11, or at other times by appointment.
