Join us for a special lecture by Dr. Kimberly Alexander, “Resistance Through Fashion: New England, 1760s-1770s”

Sunday best versus business casual? Logo t-shirts and ball caps? Designer handbags or no-names? What we wear – and don’t wear – conveys who we are and what we stand for. The same was true more than 250 years ago as American colonists were gearing up for Revolution.

Historical clothing expert Dr. Kimberly Alexander will share how our colonial counterparts grappled with the political implications of their purchases and used their clothing to demonstrate their political and moral beliefs. Dr. Alexander will also have some samples of historic clothing on display for us to view!

On the faculty of the History Department at the University of New Hampshire, Dr. Alexander is Director of Museum Studies and heads up the UNH Flax Files project. She has held curatorial positions at several New England Museums, including the MIT Museum, the Peabody Essex Museum and Strawbery Banke. Her most recent books are Treasures Afoot: Shoe Stories from the Georgian Era and Fashioning the New England Family.

One of a series of events hosted by ARCH in recognition of the 250th anniversary of the American Revolution, Dr. Alexander’s presentation will be held at the Rollinsford Public Library’s Community Room in the Lower Mill (entrance is on the river side, under the blue awning). Admission is free, although donations will be gratefully accepted.
