Huzzah for Liberty!

A 250th anniversary celebration of the arrival of the Declaration of Independence in New Hampshire

In 1776, travel was slow and it took two weeks for news of the signing of the Declaration of Independence to reach New Hampshire. Joins us as we recreate of the arrival of that momentous news in our community!

DATE: Saturday, July 18, 2026
TIME: 10 am to 4 pm
COST: This event is by donation.

At noon, Colonel John Wentworth, town resident and a leading New Hampshire Patriot, will proclaim the Declaration of Independence from the steps of the Wentworth House. Visitor participation in reading the Declaration is highly encouraged.

Throughout the day, visitors can also:

• Volunteer for service at a Continental Army recruiting table
• Meet role players in colonial attire portraying notable citizens of the town in 1776 (both Patriot and Loyalist), who will share their reactions to the news and to the ongoing conflict with the forces of the British
• Pledge loyalty to the United Colonies by signing the Association Test of 1776
• Try out a variety of colonial-era games and activities
• View New Hampshire 1776, an exhibit of objects, images, and documents illustrating local involvement in the Revolution.

Fun for all ages — there will be Children’s games and other activities!
